Norway: Petroleum Directorate and Petroleum Safety Authority to be renamed in 2024

ISSN: 2004-9641

From 1 January 2024, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (Oljedirektoratet) and Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (Petroleumstilsynet) will get new names.

The new name of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (Oljedirektoratet) will be Shelf Directorate (Sokkeldirektoratet), whilst the new name of Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (Petroleumstilsynet) will be Norwegian Ocean Industry Safety Authority (Noisa) (Havindustritilsynet).

Sokkeldirektoratet, based in Stavanger, regulates petroleum resources, and will remain part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (Olje- og energidepartementet); whilst Havindustritilsynet is an independent supervisory body on issues related to the petroleum industry.

The Government of Norway argue that the renaming of the two public bodies is necessary as they no longer deal with just oil and gas, but also wider issues like transport, storage of CO2, offshore wind, and seabed minerals.

Further details of the announcement can be assessed here.
